Back pain with walking, bending, lifting and prolonged sitting may not be due to impairments in your back. Your symptoms could be due to pelvic floor or hip impairments. Pelvic floor muscle (PFM) tightness, lengthened PFM, PFM irritation; pelvic organ prolapse; poor lifting/body mechanics, poor posture, poor abdominal/pelvic pressure regulation; and/or hip impairments may cause you to perceive pain in your low back. Your pelvic floor therapist can assess your resting posture; PFM condition; abdominal/pelvic pressure coordination; body mechanics; and evaluate your low back and hip region to help isolate the problem. Then, they can provide you with pelvic floor therapy interventions including, but not limited to: education on your condition; gentle manual therapy; abdominal pressure regulation and breath training; therapeutic exercise; training on how to correct your resting posture; and body mechanics training that can help decrease or even eliminate your symptoms.
